VIDEO/PHOTOS: One person is critically injured and multiple residents were displaced after fireworks caused a two-alarm fire at a Southeast Portland apartment building Sunday morning, officials said. At 10:15 a.m., crews with Portland Fire & Rescue responded to reports of the fire in the 1600 block of Southeast 162nd Avenue.
Neighbors told KOIN 6 News they were just getting ready for the day when they heard explosions coming from inside the building. “It was just like ‘pop pop pop pop,’” one neighbor said. “I heard an explosion, hopped out of bed and turned on a light, and heard broken glass and I looked up – there’s this big crack in my ceiling.”
Officials said first arriving crews found heavy fire and multiple explosions going off. As a result, the incident was upgraded to second alarm. Two people were also seen jumping from the building’s second floor to escape, authorities said. One of the individuals who jumped was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
