Lane County’s Howard Buford Park trails closed for prescribed burn

Lane County Parks, in collaboration with Friends of Buford Park & Mt. Pisgah and Rivers to Ridges partners, has canceled a prescribed burn in the South Bottomlands area of the Howard Buford Recreation Area (HBRA). The burn was canceled due to non-conducive weather conditions.

Certain trails will remain closed until noon on Thursday, Oct. 23. These include Trail 5 south of the arboretum boundary gate and all trails within the South Bottomlands. Signs will be posted to inform visitors of these closures.

Visitors should expect localized smoky conditions and the presence of fire crews during the burn. Lane County Parks advises monitoring weather, humidity, and wind conditions to ensure safety standards and air quality are met.

The ecological burn aims to enhance the prairie and oak savanna habitats within HBRA, one of the largest remaining blocks in the Willamette Valley. These burns have been conducted since 1999 to help preserve native plant communities and reduce wildfire risks. For updates, follow Lane County Parks on Facebook and Instagram.
