Great Oregon ShakeOut promotes earthquake preparation

Oregonians are urged to boost their earthquake preparedness from Oct. 16-19, as Governor Tina Kotek has proclaimed this period for resilience-building activities, highlighting the Great Oregon ShakeOut and the Great Oregon Camp-In. According to the Oregon Department of Emergency Management (OEM), the Great Oregon ShakeOut drill will take place on Thursday, October 16, at 10:16 a.m. This statewide event encourages everyone to practice the lifesaving action of “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.”

“The ShakeOut is more than a drill—it’s a reminder that preparedness saves lives,” said Erin McMahon, director of OEM. Participation is open to all and can be adapted to fit various settings, from home to school. Following the ShakeOut, the Great Oregon Camp-In runs from Oct. 17-19. This initiative encourages households to engage in survival activities, simulating life after a major disaster. “The Camp-In is a chance to turn preparedness into a hands-on experience,” said Kayla Thompson, OEM’s Community Preparedness Coordinator.
