Douglas County forest crews swiftly contain lightning-sparked fires near Glide, Oakland

According to the Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA), recent lightning storms sparked two fires on DFPA-protected lands on Monday. The Coon Creek Fire was located 13.5 miles northeast of Oakland and spanned 0.01 acres. DFPA crews responded swiftly, containing the fire, which is now in patrol status. The Mellow Moon Fire, another lightning-caused blaze, covered 0.1 acres and was found 17.6 miles northeast of Glide, Oregon. DFPA used a contracted Type 2 helicopter and ground crews to control and contain the fire. This fire is also in patrol status. Neither fire threatened structures or homes.

The DFPA will continue lightning reconnaissance across the district to detect any potential holdover fires. The threat of thunderstorms remains, and firefighters are ready to respond to any fire report. Drift smoke from fires outside the district may affect visibility and air quality.
