Boat resumes service after large firefighter response at Portland’s South Waterfront Park

PHOTOS: A reported fire aboard a Portland Spirit boat prompted a large firefighter presence and passenger evacuations at the South Waterfront Park on Saturday night.

Though the initial report was about a fire on the vessel, there turned out to be no fire or medical emergency aboard.

Portland Fire and Rescue said they were initially called to the scene around 8:30 p.m. As a precaution, 68 passengers evacuated, firefighters told KOIN 6 News. Fire crews said the boat, the Willamette Star, had been experiencing mechanical issues.

After firefighters checked in with the boat crew, the vessel safely resumed its journey on the Willamette River around 9 p.m.
