The Black Rock Fire, which ignited on September 4, has expanded to an estimated 32,453 acres, driven by significant wind events. As of the latest update on Sunday, the fire is 0% contained. Firefighters working the night shift faced challenging wind conditions as they attempted to contain the fire’s spread. Some rain did fall on the fire. Today, multiple air resources are being deployed to curb the fire’s expansion, while ground crews continue constructing fire lines.
The resources on the ground include five crews, three dozers, three water tenders, 13 engines, four skidgines, and one helitack crew. Air resources consist of four Single Engine Air Tankers, five helicopters, and an air attack fixed-wing plane. Crews are prioritizing the safety of firefighters and the public, as well as the protection of residences, cultural resources, agricultural improvements, and grazing allotments.
The Central Oregon Type 3 Incident Management Team is coordinating with Ashwood/Antelope, Bakeoven/Shaniko, and Wheeler County to suppress the fire. Weather conditions are expected to remain similar to yesterday, with a chance of morning showers and afternoon thunderstorms. Temperatures may reach up to 88 degrees, with potential wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. Residents in the affected areas are urged to stay informed and follow all directions from fire personnel.
