2 people jump from balconies to escape fire in SW Portland townhouse

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Three people were taken to the hospital after a house fire in southwest Portland on Saturday morning, according to Portland Fire & Rescue. At about 7 a.m., Firefighters were sent to a fire reported near Southwest Multnomah Boulevard and Southwest 51st Avenue, with two people were trapped on an upstairs balcony.

Crews found the fire burning in the first floor of a center-unit townhouse. While firefighters searched the unit, the two trapped people were able to jump – one from the back balcony, and the other from a front balcony, PF&R said. A third person was also rescued, but PF&R didnโ€™t say how. All three people were taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Crews were able to stop the flames from spreading into the adjoining units, and the cause of the fire is now being investigated, PF&R said. PF&R noted that while crews were debriefing about the fire response, a head-on crash happened near Southwest 55th Avenue and Southwest Barbur Boulevard.
