VIDEO: A fierce fire at an apartment complex near Northwest 82nd Street and Western Avenue in Oklahoma City resulted in several injuries as residents jumped from second-story windows to escape the intense flames. Witness Amanda Morrisey described the chaotic scene, saying, “When I opened my front door, all I heard was yelling and screaming, โsomeone call 911, someone help us.โ” The fire spread rapidly to two buildings, with smoke visible from miles around the metro area. “We had a lady jumping out of the window, a kid jumped out the window, and then all of a sudden it was just up in flames, black smoke everywhere,โ Morrisey said. She assisted a woman who was hesitant to jump from a window, helping her to safety.
David Shearer, shift commander for the Oklahoma City Fire Department, confirmed that four people were injured at the scene, including three who jumped from the second floor. “The third jump victim was caught by a person on the groundโand they are in good condition, were evaluated, and released on scene,” Shearer said. While the investigation will determine all the details, Shearer said one building ignited the blaze before it spread to a second on the property, causing a partial roof collapse on the initial building. “When we arrived, we had heavy fire in the attic from the front of the building all the way to the back of the building,” he said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and the number of displaced residents has not yet been determined.
