Fire crews from across Wagoner County were called out Thursday to battle an illegal burn near the 17500 block of South 385th East Avenue, officials said.
According to Wagoner County Emergency Management (WCEM), several departments responded to the scene after reports of a large pile of trash and debris being burned.
Under Oklahoma Administrative Code 252:100-13, burning large amounts of refuse, construction materials, or household debris is prohibited.
Only specific exceptions — such as agricultural or land management burns — are allowed under strict conditions outlined in state regulations.
WCEM said incidents like this not only violate state law but also create unnecessary risks for first responders and nearby residents.
Illegal burns can involve hazardous materials, worsen local air quality, and require significant manpower and equipment to contain safely.
Officials urge residents to review the state’s open burning rules before lighting any outdoor fires and to contact local authorities with questions about what is permitted.
