VIDEO: The Youngstown Fire Department (YFD) spent some time on Tuesday at Mill Creek Park learning new techniques to help with rescues. When traditional methods like ladders are not feasible in an emergency, firefighters need to know what else they can do.
Rope training, including rappelling, took place Tuesday afternoon for YFD on East Cohasset Drive. “We’ve had some incidents in the park over the last couple of years that have really sparked the interest in the team again,” said Lt. Paul Lutton. “The team is still relatively new, so we’re kinda moving along, and I think as far as the rope aspect goes, we are in really good shape right now.” The training includes realistic scenarios to simulate real-life situations, allowing firefighters to practice their skills under pressure and develop problem-solving abilities. The department said that the team trains twice a month for eight hours each session. They will learn more about water rescues in future training.
