Responders remember life and service of Chesapeake assistant fire chief

VIDEO: Friends, family and fellow first responders said goodbye to one of Ohioโ€™s finest over the weekend. Chesapeake Assistant Fire Chief Mike Campbell died on Sept. 8 while on duty at Chesapeake EMS Station 3. He was 48 years old. His partner, William Elliott, is still trying to wrap his head around the tragedy.

โ€œI just went back to work and it feels so empty. He was a good guy. I just wish I couldโ€™ve finished out my days with him,โ€ Elliott said. Campbell served as a firefighter since 1996 and spent the last eight years with the Chesapeake-Union Township Fire Department. A hole was left in the community, a fact that was apparent by the amount of supporters who attended his funeral Sunday afternoon.

Multiple fire agencies arrived at Hall Funeral Home to pay their respects and give Campbell a proper escort through the areas he served before laying him to rest. His family was met with hundreds of salutes as they exited the funeral home. โ€œHe was such a great guy. We had a lot of laughs,โ€ Elliott said. Campbellโ€™s last call was played over the radio, followed by an honor guardโ€™s salute.
