VIDEO: Friends, family and fellow first responders said goodbye to one of Ohioโs finest over the weekend. Chesapeake Assistant Fire Chief Mike Campbell died on Sept. 8 while on duty at Chesapeake EMS Station 3. He was 48 years old. His partner, William Elliott, is still trying to wrap his head around the tragedy.
โI just went back to work and it feels so empty. He was a good guy. I just wish I couldโve finished out my days with him,โ Elliott said. Campbell served as a firefighter since 1996 and spent the last eight years with the Chesapeake-Union Township Fire Department. A hole was left in the community, a fact that was apparent by the amount of supporters who attended his funeral Sunday afternoon.
Multiple fire agencies arrived at Hall Funeral Home to pay their respects and give Campbell a proper escort through the areas he served before laying him to rest. His family was met with hundreds of salutes as they exited the funeral home. โHe was such a great guy. We had a lot of laughs,โ Elliott said. Campbellโs last call was played over the radio, followed by an honor guardโs salute.
