Multiple Injured in Austintown Senior Apartments Explosion, No Fatalities

VIDEO: An explosion at a local apartment building on Saturday afternoon sent debris flying and left several residents with injuries โ€” one personโ€™s injuries were classified as โ€œserious.โ€ The explosion happened around 12:45 p.m. on the fourth floor of the Phoenix House senior living apartments on N. Meridian Road. Dozens of people were evacuated, pets were carried to safety, and buses were brought in to relocate residents.

Resident Ken Balakoff described it as โ€œpandemonium.โ€ โ€œThereโ€™s a lot of people going every which way, and debris all over the parking lot,โ€ Balakoff said.

Balakoff was on the sixth floor, saying he went back to watching TV until firefighters arrived. Others, like Sherry Flack, say she was asleep when the blast went off.

โ€œWe climbed over our furniture. Thatโ€™s because everything fell over my bookshelf, my microwave fell on the floorโ€ฆ Even my air conditioning was torn apart. So we climbed over everything and got out โ€” me and my dog,โ€ she said.
