VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Miami Township Fire Department in Clermont County was pioneering a new life-saving initiative as the first in southwest Ohio to implement a prehospital blood program. This innovative approach allows first responders to deliver blood directly to critically injured patients at the scene, potentially making the difference between life and death.
Jason Peng, director of EMS for Miami Township Fire & EMS, explained the program’s significance. “Instead of picking up the patient, doing what we typically do by trying to expedite transport, which we still do, we’re able to bring that life-saving blood product to the patient at the point of injury,” he said. The program aims to stabilize patients who are at risk of transitioning from hemorrhagic shock to cardiac arrest by providing them with blood products before they reach the operating room.
