Maria Stein community honors first responders who saved historic church from total loss

PHOTOS: Parishioners in Maria Stein thanked the first responders who saved St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at the end of May. First responders for miles rushed to put out the flames at St. Johnโ€™s the afternoon of May 29th. It was their quick work that saved the church from being a total loss.

โ€œThey abandoned their cars. Some of the firefighters left their car doors open. Some of them still had their hazard lights on because they knew how urgent it was to get to the scene. And I just remember thinking like God bless those firefighters,” said Kim Poeppelman, a Maria Stein resident and St. John’s parishioner. Now, nearly two months later, for the first time since the fire, parishioners gathered to honor those first responders, and the team thatโ€™s been working to save precious artifacts from the rubble.
