New agreement brings Minot firefighters, Air Force together for bike patrols

Two departments are joining forces to provide EMS support during special events when getting quick medical care tends to be more difficult. Minot City Leaders are working out an agreement to have the Minot Fire Department and the Minot Air Force Base Fire Department work together with bike patrols during events like parades, 5K runs, or any other event where it is hard to get an ambulance or fire truck.

โ€œWe try and get the bike patrol going and then they can kind of get through traffic faster and so theyโ€™re mainly for EMS emergencies only,โ€ Senior Firefighter Brad Newman said. The bikes are equipped with trauma dressings, an AED, and equipment for airway management and oxygen. Newman says that partnering with the Minot Air Force Base during these events will help them get to know the other firefighters in the community.

โ€œBeing able to work with them side by side, and we donโ€™t just see them on other emergencies, we see them and weโ€™re able to talk to them and get to know them,โ€ Newman said. โ€œSo when we do see them on big emergencies, we have an idea of who they already are.โ€ Newman says their firefighters are properly trained and equipped for these types of situations.
