Wilmington Fire Department holds grand opening for Station 6

VIDEO: A new fire department location will help with better response times for emergency calls.

The Wilmington Fire Department has opened station 6 that is located in the Riverlights community.

It has been years in the making, but the community joined the first responders and community leaders for a grand opening on Saturday afternoon.

The department noticed a long drive to serve the area before this building was built.

If they received calls from those who live in this neighborhood, they would send firefighters from station 5. That is located on Carolina Beach Road and Shipyard Boulevard. The location isnโ€™t that far but they had to account for traffic.

โ€œWe were coming in from Shipyard Blvd which was taking about seven minutes driving through emergency traffic,โ€ said Garry Stevenson, who worked at station 5.

Stevenson who now works for the new station says he noticed theyโ€™re able to better help this community.

โ€œThe other day we responded in two minutes, so thatโ€™s going to be a big help because the rides aren’t as long,โ€ said Stevenson.
