PHOTOS: A wildfire in Avery County was reportedly contained after burning more than 120 acres overnight, according to officials.
Officials said on Tuesday, Nov. 18, that the fire was encircled and would likely burn itself out.
The North Carolina Forest Service said the wildfire, which began on Monday afternoon, was burning along Banner Elk Highway and at the time was a threat to six homes.
Officials did not provide any information on how the fire may have started. A “red flag warning” was issued on Sunday for several counties in North Carolina. Strong winds and low humidity along with the warm temperature could create dangerous fire behavior.
The N.C. Forest Service said Tuesday that fire danger was elevated across the state and advised against outdoor burning.
The state’s fire danger map showed the majority of North Carolina was in the “very high” wildfire risk category on Tuesday. According to the map, the risk is likely to become less Wednesday and beyond.
