VIDEO: A life dedicated to helping others, that’s the legacy a Huntsville Volunteer Firefighter leaves behind. That’s just one way Donna Sorrell would describe her son-in-law, Stephen Hampton Jr., but those who knew him called him Gray. “He’s the son-in-law we prayed for,” Donna said. Her husband, Lonnie Sorrell, says the 30-year-old followed in his footsteps and became a member of the Huntsville Volunteer Fire Department, a place that now flies the flag at half-staff in his honor. “Not that he wanted the fire alarm to go off, but when it did and he was available, he’d go. He’d pour 100 percent into his job,” Lonnie said. Hampton Jr.’s wife, Kacey Hampton, says while he enjoyed serving the community, his three children were the center of his universe. “One thing I can say is that he showed us every day, he made sure to make Jesus the center of our family’s lives, and if we kept him first, we knew everything else would be okay,” Hampton said.
