A fire broke out at a waste treatment plant in south Charlotte on Tuesday morning. The fire started around 4:30 a.m. at the South Charlotte Transfer Station off of Westinghouse Boulevard between South Tryon Street and I-77, only two miles from the North Carolina-South Carolina border. When firefighters got there, they found a large trash pile burning. They battled the blaze for about an hour before it was eventually brought under control. The early-morning fire sent plumes of smoke high into the sky. The Charlotte Fire Department said nobody was hurt but did not say how the fire started. There are several large industrial buildings along that area of Westinghouse Boulevard, including Frito-Lay, Lance crackers and Sam’s Club facilities.
