VIDEO: Dog chews through battery, starts fire inside Chapel Hill home

A fire broke out at a Chapel Hill home after a dog got hold of a device with a lithium-ion battery while the owners were out of the house.

The Chapel Hill Fire Department said the dog chewed through the battery, resulting in the fire. The fire department released surveillance footage showing the moments before and after the blaze erupted inside the home.

Fire officials said the battery was charged and unplugged, and it wasn’t under any recalls, but it wasn’t stored properly, and the dog broke through the safety features. The dog was unharmed, and the home itself sustained smoke damage and a ruined rug, officials said.

The Chapel Hill Fire Department released this footage to serve as a reminder to safely charge, store and use lithium-ion batteries.
