Runner honors fallen Buncombe County firefighter with tribute run

VIDEOS: On Saturday morning, a young runner named Andrew completed a one-mile tribute run while carrying a Red Line flag to honor Violet Ray Caramella, a firefighter with the Riceville Volunteer Fire Department who was killed in an ATV accident during a training exercise near Montreat last month. Caramella was 35 years old. She is survived by her husband, Juan Caramella; her 11-year-old daughter, Ava Ray; her 8-year-old son, Samuel; her sister, Glory Silwedel; her mother, Terri Lu Bencar; and her father, Darryl Silwedel. Caramella had been with the department for a year. Two other firefighters were injured in the same training incident but have since recovered. The tribute was shared in a Facebook video posted by Running 4 Heroes, Inc. In the 10-minute clip, Andrew holds a photo of Caramella as he shares her story, then bows his head in a silent prayer before starting the run.
