Person found dead after fire ravages home near downtown Goldsboro; firefighter injured

Fire marshals are investigating what caused a house fire late Saturday night near downtown Goldsboro.

According to the Goldsboro Fire Department, fire crews rushed to the call of a structure fire just before midnight on the 300 block of North James Street.

Upon arrival, the first fire unit reported fire showing inside the house, prompting them to call more engines to the scene. Officials said a total of 20 firefighters responded to fight the blaze.

Crews found one victim dead as a result of the fire, according to officials. They said one firefighter was taken to a nearby hospital for minor injuries.

Elroy and MarMac Volunteer Fire Departments assisted with covering calls in Goldsboro while the townโ€™s fire department fought this house fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshal.
