Off-duty firefighter dies in crash, Rockingham County officials confirm

An off-duty firefighter with the Huntsville Fire Department died in a crash early Wednesday morning, according to Rockingham County officials. Around 3 a.m., Rockingham County 9-1-1 received a report of a crash near the intersection of US 220 South and Simpson Road. First responders from the Huntsville Fire Department arrived at the scene and confirmed that the driver involved was Stephen Hampton, Jr., a four-year veteran of the department. Hampton served as a firefighter, continuing a family tradition: both his father-in-law and brother-in-law are also members of the Huntsville Fire Department. โ€œThis is a profound loss to the Huntsville Fire Department and to everyone who had the privilege of knowing Stephen,” Chief J.B. Colley said. The department is asking the community to keep Hamptonโ€™s family and all members of the fire department in their thoughts and prayers.
