New Bern Firemen’s Museum Honors 9/11 Victims on 24th Anniversary

VIDEO: People all across the country, and here in the East, are remembering the tragic day of September 11th, 2001. In New Bern, the Firemen’s Museum is honoring the lives lost that day with its annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony.

Many people remember exactly where they were the morning of September 11th, 2001. Margie Roche remembers that day all too well.

“I participated. I was a first responder at the Pentagon at the time. I was working on a medevac helicopter based in Fairfax, Virginia, and it’s a great honor to have been able to really be a part of history,” said Margie Roche, who spoke at the memorial on Thursday.

She shared her first-hand memories of that dreadful day. “I went there to treat any victims and I was able to help only one patient because most people perished. I was there for the first 24 hours and it was really a surreal experience. As the day went on, there were fighter jets flying overhead… it was very surreal,” she recalled.

Each year, the New Bern Firemen’s Museum hosts a memorial at their 9/11 monument, a replica of the Twin Towers with a firefighter’s helmet in the middle, symbolizing the 343 firefighters who died that day.
