Mother killed, 1-year-old in critical condition after apartment fire in Fayetteville, police say

A Monday afternoon apartment fire killed a woman and injured her 1-year-old daughter on Yadkin Road, according to the Fayetteville Police Department.

Porsha Quarles, 35, died as a result of the fire in a two-story apartment, police said. Her 1-year-old daughter was also pulled from the fire and was in critical condition Monday night.

Police said the two lived together in a unit, which appeared to be in the Kensington Court Apartments.

Officers and firefighters responded to a call just after 1 p.m. about a fire in an apartment complex in the 6400 block of Yadkin Road, according to a news release.

Fire could be seen coming from the building when first responders got to the scene, police said, with firefighters charging into the building and pulling the mother and daughter out.

Police said both were taken to the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center by EMS, where Quarles was pronounced dead.
