Lightning strike from over a week ago ignites fire at Rowan County firefighter’s home

Rowan County crews responded to a fellow firefighter’s home after a lightning strike from over a week ago sparked a fire, officials say.

Sunday morning, around 4:30 a.m., crews from the Rockwell Rural Fire Department were paged for a possible structure fire at a firefighter’s home. Crews arrived to find smoke erupting from three sides of the structure. When crews entered the home, they located a small burnt spot under the kitchen table. Crews cut a hole in the floor and found an active fire under the home.

It was later determined that the fire had been smoldering for about a week and a half after a lightning strike hit the residence. Officials say a member of the fire department was home at the time and discovered the issue before more damage from caused. “We are grateful for all our Auto Aid departments assisting us with this incident,” the fire department said.
