Home gutted in Johnston County fire; dog pulled from home but dies, officials say

A dog died after it was pulled from a Johnston County house fire near Clayton on Saturday night, officials said.

The blaze was reported at 6:50 p.m. at 141 Redbud Drive, located in a small neighborhood about a mile south of Clayton off Little Creek Church Road, according to the Clayton Fire Department.

When crews arrived, the 1.5-story home had flames showing and the fire was already “well involved,” said Clayton Fire Battalion Chief Andrew Shaw.

No one was at home when the fire broke out, Shaw said. Crews managed to get a dog out of the home but it did not survive, he said.

The fire involved “pretty much the entire roof” and spread to other areas, according to Shaw.

About 50 crew members were involved in the fire effort, with 40 of those fighting the fire, Shaw said.

Ten people were working on a tanker task force to supply water to the blaze, he said.
