Three people in Hickory were arrested within the last month for stealing water from fire hydrants, according to city officials.
Accessing a fire hydrant without the proper knowledge or tools can damage the pipes, cause discolored water, and cause backflow that could pull in chemicals, bacteria and other pollutants.
City officials also warned that damaged hydrants could impact firefighters’ ability to fight fires.
Anyone caught stealing water from a hydrant or opening it improperly could be fined up to $5,000 and face misdemeanor and felony charges.
To report someone stealing water or trying to open a fire hydrant, call Hickory Police Department.
