Haircomb Gap Fire in Rutherford County 100% contained

VIDEO: The N.C. Forest Service says the Haircomb Gap Fire is now 100% contained and remains 20.4 acres in size.

In an update shared on Jan. 5, 2026, forest officials said precipitation and cooler overnight temperatures over the weekend helped fire suppression efforts by dampening fuels and mitigating residual heat sources and hot spots.

Firefighters with the N.C. Forest Service patrolled the area on Monday to monitor and assess any remaining hot spots.

The fire, which was initially referred to by responding fire crews as the Shumont Fire, was first reported on New Year’s Eve.

Forest Service officials said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
