Guilford County firefighters spark joy, and a love of reading, at school

For several years, the Northeast Guilford Fire Department has teamed up with Monticello-Brown Summit Elementary School to enhance students’ learning experience beyond the classroom. From โ€œFirefighter Read Aloudsโ€ and โ€œLunch Buddiesโ€ to helping kids safely into their cars during โ€œFirefighter Fridays,โ€ the partnership has become a beloved part of school life. Their latest initiative? A reading challenge for third gradersโ€”with some exciting rewards. Valencia Lylesโ€™ third-grade class took top honors, clocking an impressive 10,724 minutes of reading. The class celebrated their victory with a well-earned pizza party on Thursday. Third grader Jacob Trevino-Vazquez earned special recognition as the top individual reader, logging a remarkable 3,005 minutes. His reward? A ride to school in a fire truck.
