Firefighters evacuate 20 patients after natural gas leak at Burlington dialysis center

Firefighters evacuated 20 patients from DaVita Dialysis on Heather Road in Burlington on Wednesday after a natural gas leak forced staff and patients from the building. The Burlington Fire Department responded to 873 Heather Road around 12:20 p.m. Crews confirmed the smell of natural gas and worked with DaVita staff to evacuate patients who were receiving treatment. Firefighters set up tents, shade awnings, and electric fans to keep patients comfortable outside. Emergency responders joined dialysis staff to monitor patientsโ€™ health and arrange transportation for those needing treatment at other centers. Crews also brought additional medical supplies in case of emergencies. Piedmont Natural Gas crews repaired the leak within an hour and allowed patients and staff back inside. The Alamance County Transportation Authority transported two patients to other dialysis centers.
