1 person, 2 dogs rescued from home fire in Durham, department says

A fire broke out at a home in Durham late Monday morning, the fire department said.

According to the Durham Fire Department, firefighters responded to the blaze shortly after 11:30 a.m. near the corner of Hugo Street and Cascadilla Street.

Emergency personnel said heavy smoke and fire were coming out of the attic when they arrived. They brought the fire under control within 20 minutes through an “aggressive” attack.

One person had to be pulled out of the house by firefighters through a first-story window and taken to the hospital, according to the department.

Emergency personnel said they also rescued two dogs, who were described as “alive, alert, and doing well.”

According to the department, Durham firefighters were assisted by Durham County EMS and the Redwood Fire Department.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation as of Monday afternoon.
