The Syracuse Fire Department said unattended cooking sparked a fire at an apartment in the city very early Wednesday morning.
The fire department was dispatched to James Geddes Housing at 427 Tully St. around 12:05 a.m. for a fire alarm activation. Crews saw flames coming from a seventh-floor window.
Firefighters were met with smoke on the seventh floor. They found the fire inside a unit’s kitchen.
The department said the fire was under control in around 15 minutes. It was declared fully extinguished just five minutes later.
The kitchen sustained fire damage. Other units on the seventh floor sustained smoke and water damage.
The resident of the unit where the fire occurred was displaced. They are being assisted by the American Red Cross. The department noted that a Centro Bus provided temporary shelter for residents of the building until it was safe to re-enter.
