State Police were called to I-81 south in Oswego County for a reported car fire on Monday, June 9. According to the release, the car fire happened at around 7:18 p.m. near Central Square. Their investigation found that the driver, 50-year-old Yannick Pearson from Canada, was driving a Peterbilt tractor-trailer south on I-81 when the tires began to smoke. Pearson was able to pull onto the shoulder of the road and get out of the car safely before it caught fire, State Police said. Central Square and Brewerton Fire Departments were called to the scene, where they put out the fire. Police said that all southbound lanes were closed for a time and have since reopened.
