Team USA enlist 9/11 firefighter’s son for emotional Ryder Cup rally-cry in New York

VIDEO/PHOTOS: United States captain Keegan Bradley has invoked the spirit of 9/11 to inspire his players ahead of this weekโ€™s hugely anticipated Ryder Cup in New York.

Bradley invited a New York firefighter, Chris Mascali, whose father Joe died fighting blazes in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, to address his team at a special opening ceremony at the Bethpage Black course, just outside New York, on Monday morning.

Team USA are keeping Joe Mascaliโ€™s helmet in their team room this week to serve as inspiration.

In a video released on Tuesday, the American players could be seen choking back tears as Mascali, flanked by his son Joey, spoke to them about โ€œhonorโ€ and โ€œsacrificeโ€ and told them this weekโ€™s match was about โ€œmore than golf โ€“ itโ€™s for your country.โ€

โ€œMy dad, firefighter Joe Mascali, was a 14-year veteran of the FDNY. He and his brothers raced towards the World Trade Center, into the unknown, because thatโ€™s what the job demands; courage, sacrifice, selflessness, and a love of country.
