PHOTOS: More than 20 fire departments responded to a fire at the Novelis aluminum plant in Scriba late Tuesday night.
Novelis is served by its own fire department, but calls to several other departments started to come in after 10 p.m.
The fire was a 3-alarm fire, according to the Oswego Town Volunteer Fire Department.
Crews remained on the scene as of 9 a.m. Wednesday. Eyewitness photos show fire extending through the roof of the aluminum plant when the fire initially started.
Novelis Aluminum Plant said production is halted until further notice after the 3-alarm fire caused damage inside of the massive Oswego County plant.
An updated statement from a company spokesperson on Wednesday night stated: “Around 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16, a fire broke out at our Oswego plant. Fortunately, no injuries resulted from the fire or the efforts to put it out, which was mainly complete around 2:00 a.m. on the 17th. Production is currently halted at the plant as we investigate the cause of the fire and determine the extent of operational impact. Our top priority is employee wellbeing as we assess the situation and what will be needed to safely get the plant back online.”
