VIDEO: One man is dead and many more residents left with nothing after a fire ripped through a Bronx apartment building. The fire broke out just before 9:30 p.m. Friday on Jesup Place between Jesup Avenue and Shakespeare Avenue, according to the FDNY. The fire was on the first floor and took over an hour to control. An 85-year-old was hospitalized in critical condition and later died, police said. People nearby saw emergency responders try to resuscitate the man who did end up dying. Multiple other people were injured, including a 45-year old man, a 70-year-old man, and multiple firefighters. A young woman living on the fourth floor of this building told PIX11 News what it was like trying to escape the flames. “I couldn’t see anything, I tried to open my eyes, I couldn’t see anything. And I tried to scream cause I was so scared,” she said. “I screamed for my sister and my grandmother.…I felt my throat burning and I couldn’t breathe.”
