VIDEO/PHOTOS: All Long Island Rail Road service into Grand Central Terminal was suspended for hours Tuesday due to a fire that broke out in a tunnel. The MTA said service to and from Grand Central resumed with the 2:41 p.m. train from Grand Central to Hempstead and the 2:34 p.m. train from Jamaica to Grand Central. The MTA said it expected to operate normal rush hour service for the evening commute. The fire was sparked by an electrical panel and service had to be suspended to allow firefighters to safely access the panel. Grand Central-bound LIRR trains were either canceled at Jamaica or diverted to Penn Station. Subway service was not impacted by the incident. The MTA closed the Grand Central Madison concourse while firefighters worked to put out the fire. FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker said three firefighters and one civilian suffered minor injuries and it took several hours to find and get the fire under control.
