VIDEO: Hundreds of first responders and people throughout the community hit the pavement in this year’s Tunnel to Towers 5K run and walk in Cheektowaga. Runners say it’s important to never forget the sacrifices made 24 years ago on Sept. 11, 2001.
“I think it’s important to remember all the lives that gave everything. It’s important to remember what they did for us,” said Dylan Rager, who ran for the Ellicott Creek Volunteer Fire Company.
Rager ran the 5K wearing his full turnout gear, which weighs more than 65 pounds. “It was a little tiring, but it felt good. It felt really good,” he said.
The race is a tribute to the lives lost almost 24 years ago on Sept. 11. The race honors the heroic life of Stephen Siller. Siller was a New York City firefighter who died after strapping on his gear and running three miles through the Brooklyn tunnel to the twin towers.
Lisa Amatura is thankful every day for first responders like Siller. Amatura escaped the towers during the terrorist attack.
