Buffalo celebrates 125 years of historic Edward M. Cotter fireboat

VIDEO: Western New York is marking a historic milestone this year as the Edward M. Cotter fireboat celebrates 125 years of service to the city of Buffalo.

The Edward M. Cotter, recognized as the oldest working fireboat in the world, was honored with a ceremonial reenactment of its arrival to the city.

More than 20 boats, both local and international, escorted the Cotter back into Buffalo in front of the Buffalo Naval Park, just as vessels did more than 120 years ago.

“We are lucky to have this boat, regionally, not just the City of Buffalo,” Patrick Lalley of the Buffalo Fire Department said during Saturday’s event. “It protects us from flooding all the way down from East Aurora, which some people donโ€™t realize.”

“To have a boat like this, which is a tool for the entire region for any major catastrophe, ice breaking, and also to keep the history alive of the Buffalo Fire Department.โ€

The anniversary celebration will continue later this month with Cotter Fest, scheduled for Sept. 20 at River Fest Park in Buffalo.
