Assistant fire chief electrocuted, dies on duty in Delaware County

The New York State Police are investigating the accidental death of an assistant fire chief in the Southern Tier who died after being electrocuted while on duty on Thursday, July 17. According to State Police, East Branch Fire Department Assistant Chief Jason McGlone was responding in a rescue pumper at 9:30 p.m. to a report of a car that had hit a utility pole on State Highway 30 in the town of Hancock. Their investigation found that a low-hanging electrical wire was in contact with the top of the fire truck. When McGlone exited the car and made contact with the metal door and the ground, he was electrocuted. Police say other first responders at the scene attempted life-saving measures, but that McGlone died from his injuries. The investigation into the firefighter’s death remains ongoing.
