150 people displaced after fire at Nassau County apartment building

VIDEO: The Arson Bomb Squad is investigating after a three-story apartment in Nassau County was engulfed in flames late Thursday morning. The fire started around 11:30 a.m. in the empty space of the top floor of the 46-unit apartment building on Merrick Rd in Baldwin, NY. Around 100 firefighters gathered to fight the blaze, including firefighters from Freeport and Long Beach. “Thank God it’s not yesterday with the heat, but they did have to cycle a lot of firefighters in and out. We had firefighters from over 34 companies here from across Nassau County,” said Chief Michael Uttar of the Nassau County Fire Marshals Office. No residents were injured. Several firefighters suffered from heat exhaustion, and one Nassau County police officer was treated for smoke inhalation, officials say. “My super called me and said to come, because the building is on fire,” said third floor resident Maria Martin.
