The Turkeyfeather Wildfire, burning 22 miles south of Reserve, has grown to 24,128 acres but is now 25% contained, thanks to widespread wetting rains over the weekend and into Monday.
The fire, which began on June 30, was sparked by lightning and has been managed by the Gila Las Cruces Type 3 Incident Management Team. With fire behavior now minimal and monsoonal moisture continuing in the area, management of the fire will officially transition back to the Gila National Forest at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23.
While operations will scale down, fire crews will remain active in the area. Officials urge the public to stay alert and travel cautiously near the fire zone and around personnel.
