How New Mexico’s winds have fueled damaging fires in the state

VIDEO: High winds have been known to reduce visibility, create dust storms and fuel dangerous wildfires across the Land of Enchantment. Chief Meteorologist Grant Tosterud and Meteorologist Josh Redwine explain why spring is the windiest season in Albuquerque and New Mexico in this episode of Beyond the Forecast.

High winds are responsible for some of the state’s worst dust storms and haboobs. In March of 2025 a powerful windstorm swept through the state where wind gusts exceeded 70 mph in Albuquerque and 100 mph in San Augustine Pass. Both Meteorologists are taking a look at viewer video to determine how bad visibility can get and are also taking a closer look on why wildfire season follows closely behind the windiest time of year in the state.
