Roughly 800 gallons of gas spills at Wawa in Wildwood

A tanker truck spilled about 800 gallons of fuel at a Wawa in Wildwood, New Jersey, Sunday afternoon, according to the fire department. Wildwood fire crews were first notified about the spill that happened at the Wawa located at 418 West Rio Grande Avenue around 4:30 p.m. The Wildwood Fire Department and City of Wildwood Police Department teamed up to minimize any environmental impacts, officials said. The Wawa was evacuated and then closed down as crews responded. Some streets near Wawa were also closed as crews investigated the spill. The fire department said Monday crews used oil dry and sand to dike off nearby storm drains and prevent anything else from entering the stormwater drainage system. The U.S. Coast Guard was also told about the spill after an unknown amount of fuel got into the nearby storm drains, which drain to the intercoastal waterways on Wildwoods’ west side, according to the fire department.
