Firefighter, resident injured in fire at Campton condo complex

VIDEO: Two people, including a firefighter, are recovering from injuries after a four-alarm fire at a condominium complex in Campton. Fire crews were still at the scene of the fire at Condo Road on Thursday afternoon, several hours after they first arrived at about 9:15 a.m. Firefighters said there was heavy fire and smoke coming out of the 11-unit condominium complex when they arrived.

Officials said the fire started in one of the units here and then spread to two neighboring units. The fire chief said the building is one of the oldest and largest in town, which caused challenges for firefighters. The building has significant damage, but just how much is still to be seen. One firefighter hurt his leg when a stairwell collapsed. The firefighter called out a mayday and was taken out of the building immediately before being taken to a local hospital.

“As crews were making an aggressive interior attack, one of the floors gave way. One firefighter suffered a leg injury. He was also transported to Speare Memorial Hospital for further treatment and evaluation,” said Campton-Thornton Fire Rescue Chief Daniel Defosses.

A neighbor who was inside one of the neighboring buildings spotted the fire and called 911. “I just happened to look up and saw flames shooting out of the unit,” said resident Jessica Zulli. “I told my dad, brought my phone to call 911, put my shoes on โ€“ it was just all a blur.” Another person who was living inside the condominium complex was taken to a hospital with severe burns. That person’s condition has not been released.
