18 displaced by fire at Manchester apartment building

Some Manchester families who were displaced in a fire Monday morning might be able to return home by the end of the day, fire officials said. The fire broke out around 6:45 a.m. at an apartment building on Amherst Street.

Arriving firefighters saw smoke coming out of two windows on the third floor. They entered the building and knocked the fire down, the fire chief said. Fire officials said 18 people were displaced in the fire and taken to the public works building to stay warm.

“It was a nine-unit apartment building. Currently, three out of the nine units are uninhabitable,” said Manchester Fire Marshal Mitch Cady. “I’m in conversations with the landlord. He’s making arrangements to have some repairmen come out and get six out of the nine units re-energized, get the gas back on, get the heat back on, so that some of the displaced families can move back into those apartments.”

Cady said the landlord is also working on finding alternative housing for the remaining three families who were displaced. The American Red Cross and other organizations were also helping the fire victims with blankets and supplies.
