Washoe Valley marks one year since Davis Fire as community continues long road to recovery

The Washoe Valley community is still grappling with the aftermath of the Davis Fire, which ravaged the area one year ago. The fire, which ignited last September, scorched 5,824 acres over 18 days, forcing the evacuation of 20,000 residents and drawing more than 600 firefighters from across the nation to battle the blaze. For many families who lost their homes, the anniversary of the fire remains an emotional time. Hannah Hoobyar, whose family lost everything, said, “It’ll just always be a special and heartfelt day for us, because it was the worst day, because we lost our house.”

Hoobyar and her family marked the one-year anniversary by gathering at their rental home in south Reno, reflecting on the day that changed their lives. “It was just a surreal day yesterday, realizing that at three o’clock and we’re like, wow, at three o’clock the fire was going. And then four o’clock, our house had already been gone at that point,” she said. The past year has been challenging for the Hoobyar family as they navigated finding a rental home, dealing with insurance companies, and seeking funding to rebuild their lives.
