Nevada fire departments partner up for National Fire Prevention Week; focus is on lithium-ion batteries

During National Fire Prevention Week from Sunday through Friday, Oct. 5 to 11, the Reno Fire Department, Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District and other northern Nevada fire departments in partnership with the National Fire Protection Association are raising awareness about the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries and how to minimize them. โ€œIn our daily lives, we rely on many battery-operated devices, from small cellphone batteries to electric bikes and scooters, which can pose a fire risk if not handled properly,โ€ said Reno Fire Marshal John Beck.

โ€œThatโ€™s why it is so important to understand how to charge, store, and dispose of them safely.โ€ Itโ€™s theme is โ€œCharge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.โ€ Its goal is to educate the public about using these types of batteries safely. The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District stresses the importance of buying products listed by a nationally recognized testing lab, using charging equipment that is compatible with your device, and recycling batteries at a battery recycling location.
