Las Vegas Sunrise Ceremony marks 8 years since One October

VIDEO: Las Vegas is gathering to mark eight years since tragedy struck the community. A gunman opened fire on the Route 91 Harvest Festival near the Strip on Oct. 1, 2017. Fifty-eight people were killed and hundreds of others were injured. Two people later died from their injuries months after the shooting. It remains the deadliest mass shooting in American history. Wednesday morning, Clark County and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police co-hosted a sunrise ceremony to remember the lives lost and honor the survivors. The names of all 60 people who died from the shooting were read at the ceremony, held at the Clark County Government Center Amphitheater.

From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Vegas Golden Knights will host a blood donation drive outside City National Arena in Summerlin. Appointments can be booked at Vitalant.org. Later in the evening, the city of Las Vegas will host its annual ceremony at the Community Healing Garden, starting at 10:05 p.m. A bell will toll and a candle will be lit in remembrance of each person. For those who cannot attend either of Wednesday’s events, Clark County is hosting a “Remembering 1 October” exhibit through Thursday, Oct. 9, in the Rotunda Gallery. The exhibit features a selection of items from the Clark County Museum’s 1 October collection, such as mementos left at the “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign and other locations as offerings of support.
